The 2000 Honda S2000 is the roadster's first model year, launched in 1999 and carrying the AP1 chassis code. It used a 1,997 cc inline four cylinder DOHC VTEC engine, codenamed F20C, with a six speed manual transmission and a Torsen limited slip differential, and it was the car Honda claimed had the highest specific output of any naturally aspirated production engine in the world. Standard features included independent double wishbone suspension, electrically assisted steering, integrated roll hoops, 16 inch wheels and an electrically powered vinyl top, with Berlina Black, New Formula Red, Grand Prix White and Silverstone Metallic as the first US colours. In Japan, Honda announced the Type V with variable gear ratio steering on 7 July 2000.
