In 2001 the 6.0 liter V8 in 2500 series Suburbans gained 20 horsepower from a number of changes including aluminum cylinder heads. It was the second year of the GMT800 generation introduced for 2000, with the Suburban offered in half ton 1500 and three quarter ton 2500 versions, while GMC marketed its equivalent as the Yukon XL. The long serving 5.7 and 7.4 liter V8 engines had been retired for 2000.
