For 2006 the flagship LTZ and SS trims were introduced to the Malibu, and the car underwent a mid cycle revision in which the chrome bar of the front fascia was removed in favor of a smaller rectangular grille between the headlights, with the lower air intake made narrower. This gave the sixth generation Malibu, which was also sold as a Maxx liftback, a fresher face for its last two years. The SS trim stood for Super Sport and sat beside the LTZ at the top of the line.
