The sixth generation Malibu was released for the 2004 model year, and the previous generation model line took on the Chevrolet Classic nameplate, produced exclusively for sale to fleet customers. The N platform was retired and replaced by the Opel designed Epsilon platform introduced by the 2002 Opel Vectra C and 2003 Saab 9-3. The V6 of the Classic was dropped in favor of the 144 horsepower 2.2 liter Ecotec four.
