The Malibu was extensively redesigned and reengineered for the 2008 model year, with styling by Bryan Nesbitt, and the trim levels were LS, LT, Hybrid for 2008 and 2009 only, and LTZ. The Malibu Maxx liftback was discontinued, with the previous Malibu sedan becoming the Malibu Classic for 2008, marketed as the four cylinder LS for fleet sales and the V6 LS and LT for retail sale. Partway through the year the 2.4 liter Ecotec was offered with a six speed automatic.
