For 1997 Chevrolet revived the Malibu nameplate after a 14 year hiatus, as the successor to the Chevrolet Corsica, though the Beretta was not replaced. The car was Motor Trend magazine's Car of the Year for 1997, a decision that Car and Driver later criticized in 2009. It was marketed as a large compact car but was sized much like its 1983 counterpart, with a 107 inch wheelbase. The N body Malibu was built at the Wilmington and Oklahoma City Assembly plants.
