The last year of the fifth generation, 1976, left the redesigned Custom Coupe with its wide B pillar and fixed rear window as the only two door Impala, since the pillarless Sport Coupe was dropped after 1975. The 1976 cars used the previous year's Caprice nose with a new egg crate grille insert, and the Landau model continued. The Custom Coupe body style, introduced for the 1974 model year, was a precursor to Detroit's complete abandonment of pillarless body styles before the end of the 1970s.
