El Camino production ended quietly in late 1987, and the GM Media Archive and Heritage Center confirmed that no 1988 El Caminos or Caballeros were ever produced. Some model year 1987 cars, 420 El Caminos and 325 GMC Caballeros, are listed as new car retail deliveries in calendar year 1988 based on their date of first retail sale. The nameplate had last been built in 1987 in Mexico. The GMC Caballero, the badge engineered twin, ended at the same time, and the nameplate had been produced for 1959 and 1960 and from 1964 to 1987.
