The ZR1 was shown at the Geneva Motor Show in 1989, and went on sale later that year, available only as a fastback coupe with a removable roof panel. General Motors had bought Group Lotus in 1986, and the ZR1 used an engine developed with Lotus as the best performing Corvette of its day. Its sales years were 1990 to 1995. The ZR1 was the first Corvette of its generation developed with Lotus engineering, and for 1990 it was set apart from the base car by a convex rear fascia and square taillights.
