For 1956 the Corvette received a new body, with real glass roll up windows in place of side curtains and a stronger convertible top, which made it a more civilized car. Sales were still low at 3,467, which was fewer than the 3,640 of 1954 and the third lowest in the history of the model. Zora Arkus-Duntov, who became director of high performance vehicle design and development for Chevrolet in 1956, earned the nickname Father of the Corvette, and the chassis and suspension design taken from the full size Chevrolets stayed in use through 1962.
