The Bel Air received a major redesign for the 1959 model year, built on a 119 inch wheelbase and 211 inches long, eleven inches longer than the 1957 model. It was three inches wider outside and had five inches more width inside than in 1958, through the reduction of door thickness, and the X frame was enlarged and strengthened to support the new body. The Bel Air, which had been the top line series since 1953, was now the middle range, under the Impala.
