Coupe models entered production in January 1998 and could be ordered from spring, with deliveries starting in September 1998. The M versions were available in both roadster and coupe body styles, powered by the S50, S52 or S54 straight six depending on country and model year. A new coupe thus joined the roadster as a distinct option for those who wanted a more rigid body. It was a year in which the Z3 became available as both an open roadster and a closed coupe in the BMW range.
