In April 1999 the facelift versions of the Z3, called LCI, began production, with revised details. In the same year the BMW M division produced a single prototype Z3 powered by the 5.4 liter M73 V12 engine to test the space in the engine bay, and the German magazine Autozeitung tested the fully functional one-off. The Z3 appeared in the film The World Is Not Enough. The updated Z3 therefore had the sharper looks of the late model, and the V12 test showed what the engine bay could hold.
