The first X6 officially debuted at the 2008 North American International Auto Show in Detroit, after the concept had been seen at the 2007 Frankfurt show, and it was released for sale in April 2008 for the 2008 model year. Production began on 3 December 2007 at the North American plant in Greer, South Carolina. It was slightly longer and wider than the X5 but significantly lower, seating four. It was lower than the X5 and seated four.
