The iX5 hydrogen powered fuel cell electric version of the X5 was launched in February 2023, after being unveiled as a concept at the IAA show in 2019. In March 2023, for the 2024 model year, the X5 LCI facelift entered production, adding a revised front grille and bumper, redesigned lights and new wheel designs. The X5 xDrive50e plug in hybrid was part of the line up. The 2023 model year xDrive50e still had a smaller battery and less power.
