In August 2019 BMW revealed an armoured variant called the X5 Protection VR6, which can withstand attacks from AK 47 bullets. The X5 M and X5 M Competition, the F95, were revealed on 1 October 2019 and released at the Los Angeles Auto Show for the 2020 model year. The xDrive45e plug in hybrid was also launched in 2019 alongside the petrol variants. The X5 had been on sale in its fourth generation for a year. In 2019 the X5 range gained its first performance M models in this generation.
