The first X4 was unveiled at the 2014 New York International Auto Show, and then at the 13th Beijing International Automotive Exhibition and the Auto Mobil International in Leipzig. It had been previewed by the Concept X4 at Auto Shanghai in 2013. The early models included the xDrive20i, xDrive28i, xDrive35i, xDrive20d, xDrive30d and xDrive35d, in a coupe style crossover based on the F25 X3 and built at Spartanburg.
