The M Performance M40i model of the X4 was announced in 2015, a high performance version with a turbocharged six cylinder engine. The X4 was in its first full year of sales as BMW's second Sports Activity Coupe, after the X6, with the roofline of a traditional two door coupe, and it was built at the Spartanburg plant, which had received 900 million dollars of investment for its X models. It was built at Spartanburg alongside the X3.
