In 2008 BMW started competing with the Mercedes-Benz GLK-Class, a new rival in the compact luxury SUV segment that the X3 had until then largely had to itself. Since September 2008 the Edition Exclusive and Edition Lifestyle trims were available on the E83. The X3 continued in production at the Magna Steyr plant in Graz, which had built all of the cars under contract. It was a year in which the E83 faced new competition from the GLK.
