The M6 line began in 1983 with the M635CSi, the performance version of the E24 6 Series coupe. It was powered by the M88/3 double overhead cam straight six, a modified version of the engine used in the M1 supercar. The M635CSi was the model that opened the run which would last, with a gap, until 2019, and it was sold under the badge of BMW's motorsport division in the 1980s. A top speed of 255 kilometers per hour made the European M635CSi the second fastest BMW built up to then, after the M1.
