The i8 was released in Germany in June 2014 as a 2015 model year car, after series production of customer vehicles began in April 2014, and deliveries to retail customers in the United States began in August 2014. The production version had been unveiled at the 2013 Frankfurt Motor Show, and the car followed the i3, which was the first model of the BMW i brand, launched in 2013. The car had a carbon fibre passenger cell and scissor doors.
