The i4 was revealed fully production ready in March 2021, three months ahead of schedule, and went on sale in November 2021 as a 2022 model. The Munich plant had been closed for six weeks in the summer of 2020 to convert more than 1000 robots in the body shop and assembly area for the i4, after an investment of about 200 million euros, and the electric motor is assembled at Dingolfing. It was the fifth model of the BMW i brand.
