BMW confirmed in early 2022 that production of all i3 models was scheduled to end in July 2022, with the car succeeded in some markets by the iX1. Its global sales totalled 250,000 units by the end of 2022. The i3 had been BMW's first mass produced zero emissions vehicle, launched in 2013 as part of the BMW i sub-brand. Its end came after nearly nine years in production and about 250,000 cars built in Leipzig.
