In 2017 BMW announced the addition of the i3s, a sporty version, to the line up beginning with the 2018 model year. BMW only managed to sell 6,276 i3 cars in the United States in 2017, a drop of 17 percent from 2016, though a purchase incentive of up to 10,000 dollars was available for 2017 or 2018 models. The i3 had a bigger battery in its second generation of the pack. The i3s was scheduled to start with the 2018 model year.
