In May 2016 BMW announced the 2017 model year i3 would have a 94 Ah, 33 kWh battery with 27.2 kWh net usable, allowing increased range in both the all electric and range extended versions. The 2017 model was released in the United States and Europe in July 2016, and by 10 August orders for the larger battery i3 had exceeded 7,000 units. The larger battery gave the i3 a longer range than the 60 Ah battery of the first cars.
