The i3 launched for customers in Europe in the fourth quarter of 2013 as the first model of the BMW i brand available on the market, with production starting in Leipzig in September 2013. The production car was announced in July 2013 as a 2014 model year vehicle, after being shown as a concept at the 2011 International Motor Show Germany and as a prototype at the 2012 London Olympics. It was built at Leipzig, which also built the i8, in the first volume production of carbon fibre cars.
