The 501 was manufactured from 1952, introduced at the first Frankfurt Motor Show in 1951, as the first BMW model to be manufactured and sold after the Second World War, and the first BMW automobile actually built in Bavaria. The same year, to avoid illegally using BMW's name and logo, Awtowelo renamed its concern EMW, Eisenacher Motorenwerk, in 1952, and replaced the blue in the BMW logo with red.
