The E39 was replaced by the E60 5 Series in 2003, but E39 models stayed in production until May 2004. The Alpina B10 3.3 Touring ended its run in October 2003 and the Alpina D10 ended in October 2003 as well. The E39 M5 production was completed that year, so the model reached the end of a successful run of eight years. The pre production cars of the E39 had been seen in 1995 and the car had a production life of nearly nine years.
