The 540i Protection light armored vehicle was launched in Europe in September 1997 as the E39 grew its range. The Alpina B10 V8 pre facelift, based on a 540i saloon, started production in January 1997, and the Alpina B10 3.2 based on a 528i was introduced at the IAA Motor Show in 1997. The E39 was by then BMW's top selling executive car. The Alpina B10 V8 had begun that January, and the D10 diesel was still two years from its debut.
