The Alpina B10 V8 S, based on the 540i saloon, began production in January 2002 and ran until May 2004. Satellite navigation, initially using maps on CD, moved to DVD maps in 2002 as the E39 stayed in the 5 Series range while BMW prepared the E60 successor, which was in development under Chris Bangle's design direction. Alpina's V8 S version was the final evolution of the Alpina B10 V8 range, which began in 1997.
