North American M5 production began in late 1986, two years after European M5 production started, and it was a car produced for only twelve months as a 1988 model year car. The American line up that year consisted of the 528e, 535i, the 524td in its second year and the M5, and so the E28 grew into the high performance flagship of the 5 Series range. That year the American line up had four models, from the economy 528e to the M5.
