BMW announced on 26 May 2020 that the G22 4 Series would be unveiled online in June, with a teaser image of the range topping M440i model, and the car was launched in June 2020 for the 2021 model year. It was previewed by the Concept 4 shown at the 2019 Frankfurt Motor Show, and it came with a very large kidney grille. The second generation thus followed the same split of coupe, convertible and liftback bodies as the first.
