The F40 1 Series ended its run in 2024 after five years, when the F70 was officially unveiled on 4 June 2024 and set to commence production later that year. The F40 had been a front wheel drive five door hatchback throughout its time, built mostly at Leipzig, and it had followed the rear wheel drive generations that BMW had sold since 2004. The F40 had been the 1 Series since September 2019 and the F70 followed it from July 2024.
