The 1 Series F52, a four door sedan for the Chinese market, began production in 2017 using the front wheel drive platform that would underpin the third generation 1 Series hatchback. The F20 continued as the rear wheel drive hatchback for the rest of the world. In 2017 the F20 and F21 were still produced in Leipzig and Regensburg. It meant the 1 Series line included a rear wheel drive hatchback and a front wheel drive sedan.
