The E87 five door hatchback was in its first full year of sales in 2005, with the 116i, 118i, 120i and the diesel 118d and 120d among the models. In May 2005 a commercial for the 1 Series hatchback showed Kermit the Frog driving the car in a desert making figure eights to show off its agility, and the 1 Series was now established against the Audi A3 and Volkswagen Golf. It was the first full year for the new rear wheel drive hatchback that had replaced the 3 Series Compact.
