The first 1 Series production models, in the E87 five door hatchback body style, were launched at the Paris Motor Show in September 2004. The car had been previewed by the CS1 concept at the 2002 Geneva show and was the successor to the 3 Series Compact. It was a rear wheel drive subcompact with a premium price, designed under Chris Bangle, and sold globally from that September. The compact car was built at Regensburg and Leipzig, in Germany, from the beginning.
