The MG variants of the Maestro were discontinued in 1991, their place effectively being filled in the Rover range by faster versions of the 200 series hatchback. The Maestro was by then a cheaper alternative to the Rover 200, kept on sale with more basic equipment, produced in Oxford by the Rover Group, which had been formed from BL as its successor. The MG badge was not used after that year. The Maestro was built at Oxford.
