The Maestro was officially launched on 1 March 1983, and it was Britain's sixth best selling car in 1983 and 1984, with more than 80,000 sales in its second year. The MG Maestro 1600 was included in the original 1983 model range but discontinued the following year, rushed into production against engineers' advice at the launch in March 1983 and under developed. The Maestro was a five door hatchback or a two door van.
