Between 1957 and 1958 a series of automatic transmission test vehicles was made on the FX3, of which only two are known to survive. The FX3 was by then in its ninth year of production as the London taxicab of Austin, built by Carbodies, and the Austin FX4 that was to replace it was already being designed, together with the same dealers, for introduction the following year. Only two of the test cars are still known today.
