The Austin Eighteen was introduced on 14 July 1937 as a large saloon in two wheelbases to carry five or seven passengers. It replaced the York Sixteen, with its engine and front seat mounted nine inches further forward and the chassis extended by three inches to provide twelve inches more space for passengers. Its engine benefited from improvements made to the 12 horsepower engine of the new Ascot of 1936, and the frame was rigidly cross braced.
