The Austin A40 Somerset ended its production in 1954, having been built by the Austin Motor Company from 1952, as a saloon with a convertible version, in about two years. It had replaced the A40 Devon of 1947. The Somerset ran for only two years. It had been marketed as a four door saloon, with a three passenger two door convertible of the same body style introduced in late 1952. A special version of around 500 saloons had been built in 1953 with the more powerful engine from the sports model, whose twin SU carburettors replaced the single Zenith type, so the final year of the Somerset ended a short run.
