A prototype A40 Dorset Tourer was built at Longbridge in 1948, and various versions of the A40 Tourer were made in Australia beginning in September 1948, although the Tourer was never put into production in England. The Countryman estate of 1948 was a somewhat larger estate of the A40 Devon, with sideways opening rear doors fitted to Austin estate cars since the A40 Devon Countryman. The A40 Devon was the more successful body.
