The Land Rover Defender is the name adopted in 1990 for Land Rover's long running utilitarian off-road vehicle, directly descended from the original Land Rover Series first launched in 1948. Recognizable by its boxy aluminum bodywork on a separate ladder frame chassis, the original design remained in production largely unchanged in basic concept until 2016, after which an entirely redesigned Defender launched in 2020 as a modern successor.
