Hawker Siddeley HS 748

Airliners and Commercial Jet Aircraft

The Hawker Siddeley HS 748, first known as the Avro 748, is a medium-sized twin turboprop airliner and was the last aircraft developed by Avro before it joined Hawker Siddeley. Powered by Rolls-Royce Dart engines, it was meant as a modern feederliner to replace the ageing Douglas DC-3, with strong short takeoff and landing performance and a rugged build. It first flew on 24 June 1960 and entered revenue service in 1961. Production ended in 1988 after 380 aircraft had been built by Hawker Siddeley and by Hindustan Aeronautics in India. The military HS 780 Andover grew from it, and so did the larger BAe ATP.
