Space transport is the use of spacecraft to carry people or cargo into, through, or back from outer space, encompassing both human spaceflight and uncrewed cargo missions. Orbital space transport began on 4 October 1957, when a derivative of the Soviet R-7 rocket launched Sputnik 1, the first artificial satellite to reach orbit. For most of the following six decades nearly all orbital transport was funded and flown by national governments; commercial space transport became a rapidly developing field only in the 2010s, marked by SpaceX's first vertical landing and recovery of an orbital class rocket first stage on 21 December 2015. Government and private operators today use space transport to carry communications satellites, scientific payloads, cargo and crew to orbit.
