An animal-powered transport mode in which one or more horses draw a wheeled carriage, coach or cart carrying passengers or goods, with the animals providing the pulling power while the occupants ride inside or on the vehicle rather than mounted directly on the horse. Horse-drawn carriage transport was the standard means of overland passenger travel for the wealthy and of urban and short haul freight movement in much of the world before the automobile, and it survives today mainly as a tourist, ceremonial and heritage mode of transport in historic city centers and at events such as weddings.
