Ariane 3 was a European expendable carrier rocket of the Ariane family, used for eleven launches between 1984 and 1989. Aérospatiale was its principal manufacturer and the French space agency CNES led its development, which was authorised in July 1979. Built on the design and launch infrastructure of Ariane 1 and developed alongside Ariane 2, it added two solid-fuelled strap-on boosters to the first stage and could launch two satellites in one flight. Its first stage used four Viking 2B engines, the second a Viking 4B and the third a cryogenic HM7B burning liquid hydrogen. It first flew on 4 August 1984, ahead of Ariane 2, and its design strongly influenced that of Ariane 4.
