The Mitsubishi X-2 Shinshin, formerly the ATD-X, is a Japanese experimental aircraft built to test technologies for an advanced stealth fighter. The Technical Research and Development Institute of the Japanese Ministry of Defense developed it, with Mitsubishi Heavy Industries as prime contractor, and it is commonly seen as Japan's first domestically made stealth fighter. Work began at Mitsubishi's Komaki South Plant in 2009 after Japan was refused the F-22. It was unveiled on 29 January 2016 and first flew on 22 April 2016 from Nagoya. Two IHI XF5 low-bypass turbofans with three-dimensional thrust vectoring power it, and its test programme led to the F-X and Japan's part in the Global Combat Air Programme.
