Saab 21R

Military Aircraft

The Saab 21R was a Swedish fighter and attack aircraft, the jet-powered development of the piston-engined Saab 21 and the first jet aircraft Saab produced. The R in the name stands for reaktion, the Swedish word for jet power. From 1947 Saab converted existing J 21 aircraft to jet propulsion, which meant changing more than half of the airframe, tailplane and wing and fitting a British de Havilland Goblin turbojet in place of the piston engine and propeller. The first converted prototype flew on 10 March 1947, and along with the Soviet Yakovlev Yak-15 it was one of only two jet fighters successfully converted from piston power. A planned 124 aircraft fell to 64, mostly used as fighter-bombers. It served from August 1950 until it was replaced by designs jet-powered from the start, such as the Vampire and the Saab 29 Tunnan.
