The Renault 98 is an agricultural tractor made by Renault from March 1970, with a four-wheel-drive version called the 498 that appeared in November of the same year. Production of both ended in 1973. Fitted with a six-cylinder engine of 90 horsepower DIN, the two tractors showed Renault's wish to establish itself in the high-power segment, but only 653 were built, 489 Renault 98 and 165 Renault 498. Renault Agriculture had favoured mid-range tractors for medium-sized farms, as the D22 built in over 31,000 examples showed, but demand for more power and four-wheel drive grew in the 1960s, so Renault launched its 90 series in 1969. The engine is an air-cooled inline six-cylinder MWM diesel of 5,013 cubic centimetres delivering 90 horsepower at 2,350 rpm, the gearbox gives eight forward and two reverse speeds, and top speed is 21.8 km/h. The front axle of the 498 is made by ZF, making it Renault's first six-cylinder four-wheel-drive tractor.
